Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of supplementing Russian Cannabis Seed powder to Awassi ewes, as part of a research project at the Department of Animal Production, College of Agriculture, University of Kirkuk. The animals were divided into three groups: a control group that received no supplements, and two experimental groups that received Cannabis Seed powder at two different doses (200 and 300 mg per animal daily). The researchers used a specific behavioral assessment protocol, with eight students and two professors observing the ewes' behavior every other day and recording seven behavioral descriptions using a visual scale. The results showed clear differences between the two groups. The groups receiving the supplements experienced a decrease in stress, aggression, and anorexia, while the supplemented subjects reported increases in calmness, comfort, sleepiness, and positive social interaction. These effects were most pronounced in the group receiving the highest dose (300 mg per animal daily), suggesting a potential dose-response relationship. These results suggest that Cannabis Seed supplements may contribute to improved behavior and health in ewes through their calming effects, likely due to their cannabidiol and essential fatty acid content. However, the study recommends further research to confirm the long-term safety and effectiveness of these supplements.
